James “Jimmy” Leary, also affectionately known as “Big Cat,” passed away on October 14, 2025, at the age of 63, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Canton, MA, to the late David and Virginia Leary, he later settled in Franklin, where he raised his family. Most recently, he divided his time between Florida and Massachusetts, to maximize his golf season.
With a personality that was larger than life he truly was one of a kind. He had a twinkle in his eye that could charm anyone, and a presence that instantly filled the room. Coaching was one of his biggest passions. He always spoke of his incredible memories coaching soccer and building relationships with his players and their families. He could most often be found by the ocean or out on the golf course. His father once told him that golf would carry him through his whole life, and that it did. He was deeply proud of the achievements he reached in both his personal golf game and professional caddying career.
Above all, the true joy of his life was his family. He adored his children and grandchildren more than anything. He is survived by his daughter Megan Behrer and her husband James, and his daughter Laura Leary. As a devoted and loving grandfather, “Papa Jim” took endless pride and joy in his five grandchildren — Sean, Brielle, Jaxon, Wyatt, and Nolan. He was a devoted brother to Jennifer Costello and her husband Stephen, and a beloved “Unkie” to their children Monica, Bridget, and Owen. Jim is now reunited in heaven with his parents and his beloved son-in-law, Gregory Gonsalves.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Saturday October 18th, at 9AM from the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 1 Church Square Franklin at 10AM.
