Francis “Frank” J. Conley 81 of Squantum and Falmouth, MA passed away on October 7 after a courageous battle with cancer. Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Johanna Donovan Conley, and his loving stepdaughter, Julie Donovan, and her husband, Christopher Buttimer. He is also survived by his sister, Lorraine Crowell, of Braintree and several nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Norma and Frank Conley, and his brother, Kenneth.
Frank graduated from Suffolk Law School and had a career that spanned decades. He worked as a public defender and in private practice before becoming the Regional Council for the Small Business Administration—a position he held for over thirty years. Additionally, he served as a campaign consultant for many political candidates, including handling the major cities on the East Coast for Jimmy Carter’s presidential bid. Frank loved talking about politics and watching it all unfold as the political theater that it is.
Frank also loved boats, racing sailboats in the Newport-to-Bermuda race as well as in many of the Caribbean races. He particularly loved his boats in Falmouth, and he had a collection of fishing rods and lures that could challenge Bass Pro.
Frank loved golf and won a few tournaments, several with his close friend, Bob McCarthy. He also enjoyed golfing with his wife, Johanna, both in Falmouth and in Florida.
Most of all, Frank loved his family. Johanna was at his side through the last few months as the cancer increasingly waged a painful war on his body. His last three weeks in the hospital were filled with family and many, many friends. His stepdaughter, Julie, and her husband, Chris, were there to support not only Frank but also Johanna. His sister, Lorraine, sat by his bedside for hours talking about old times.
Frank will be greatly missed in the hearts of many for his loyalty, compassion, and generosity. Rest in peace, Frankie.
