Elsie Ruth Wright, born in Tifton, Georgia, on June 27, 1944, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, at the age of 81. Her life was a radiant tapestry of service, compassion, and joy that touched hearts across the globe.
The daughter of Ruth Fulwood Wright and George Wright, Sr., Elsie was a proud graduate of Florida Southern College, earning her Bachelor of Arts in 1966 with honors (Cum Laude). She went on to receive her Master of Social Work from Tulane University in 1972, launching a career devoted to helping others.
From 1968 to 1970, Elsie served with the American Red Cross in Korea and Vietnam, honored to be a Donut Dollie—bringing comfort and cheer to soldiers during difficult times. Her work as a clinical social worker in Spartanburg, South Carolina, spanned many years and left a lasting impact on the community she served. She was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where her faith and fellowship were deeply felt.
Elsie’s adventurous spirit led her to travel the world extensively, and she maintained close friendships with people she met along the way. She was known for her vibrant personality, love of live music, and her unwavering belief in helping those less fortunate. She truly was the life of the party, lighting up every room she entered.
She is survived by her brother George Wright, Jr., and his wife Marilyn Wright, a dear friend to Elsie. Her special cousin Suzanne Click (Dudley), and her beloved nieces Vishala White, Cathy Wisham (Jon), and Jackie Merrill (Chris) will carry forward her memory with love. She also leaves behind many cousins from both the Fulwood and Wright families, and the family of her longtime partner, Zerno Martin, Jr., all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Elsie Ruth Wright’s legacy is one of laughter, generosity, and deep human connection. She will be missed dearly and remembered always.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Fulwood Garden Center, 802 12th Street, Tifton, GA. Please honor Elsie’s joyful spirit by wearing cheerful, Elsie-inspired clothing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross and Trinity United Methodist Church of Spartanburg, SC, causes close to Elsie’s heart.
