Obituary

Judith Ann Steenson
May 28, 1945 – October 6, 2025

Judy passed peacefully on October 6, 2025, at the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham, Massachusetts. Judy was born in Seth, West Virginia and was the last surviving sibling of 7. She spent most of her life in Connecticut with her 2 daughters Cindy and Diane. Being a single mother, she made unique career choices that would afford to give her daughters a better life. She served in the National Guard, worked as a computer programmer, worked in real estate, ran a restaurant and worked as a banquet server. She was the first female iron worker in Connecticut and finished her career as a corrections officer for the state of Connecticut for 26 years. Most of those years were spent at York Women’s Prison where she cared equally about her colleagues and the inmates. She took great pride in helping inmates have a better life and bragged about those who were discharged and never needed to return. Staff and inmates alike would refer to her as “Momma Steenson”. She retired at the age of 72 and moved to Massachusetts to be close to her daughters and family. Everyone who knew Judy would tell you the same thing, she was a hard worker and a giver whether it was the food on her plate, possessions she thought you liked, her time and even the shirt off her back if she thought it would help. Many close to her know about the battles over paying for dinner. She would always go the extra mile for someone, including flying to Florida with Diane’s mother-in-law Jane, to pick up and drive home a car for Diane. The ensuing journey will forever be known as the adventures of Thelma & Louise. When asked if she needed to take time for herself, she responded my cup is never empty because God keeps it full.

She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Steenson of Westerly, RI, Diane Rutan of Braintree, MA, and grandchildren Tiffany Farrauto of Middletown, CT, Emma Rutan of Brooklyn, NY and William Rutan of Braintree, MA.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at The Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester Street, South Boston on Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 3:00-5:00P.M..
