Obituary

CORNISH- August "Gus" H. Horter, age 78, US Army Veteran, passed away comfortably on October 4, 2025, at Togus Springs Hospice in Augusta, where he had transitioned for care after a second major stroke in early September.
Gus had been a fixture at Dunkin’ Donuts, Call’s and other businesses near his Pumpkinville home for much of the past two decades, but had withdrawn in recent years with the onset of multiple health issues.
Gus was born and raised in Newark, NJ and was a proud Army Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War, in which he served from May 1967 to April 1968. He was married in the 1970s and has a daughter, Jennifer, from whom he has been estranged for many years. He worked at Newark International Airport, and as a bartender and as a club manager in NJ. Gus moved to Maine about 2006, following his sister Nancy Lundy of Hiram who preceded him in death in May of this year.
The son of Jack and Evelyn Horter, he is survived by a sister Lynn McManus and her husband Ira of South Carolina and their children Gabrial Ramos and wife Kim of CA, Eva Ramos and Paul Stearly of FL and Toni Reece of SC; and the children of Nancy Lundy, Debra Esculano of NJ and Anthony Esculano of Hiram; and a brother-in-law, William Lundy of Hiram. Additionally, he is survived by some fifteen grand-nieces and nephews, and the children of Ian and Jill Lundy and of Erin (Lundy) and Harry Hepworth of PA.
There will be no public service at this time, but something will be planned after arrangements have been finalized for his internment at Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale.
