J.R. Day, 89, of Irwinville, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Friday, September 1, at Waterloo Baptist Church, with Rev. Sonny Pate, Rev. Donnie Wright and Rev. Jim Berry officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9, Thursday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Day was born June 27, 1917, in Cleburn County, Alabama, to the late Robert Newton and Samantha McClauroy Day. He was a farmer and had lived in the community most of his life. Mr. Day was wounded at Anzio Beach Head during the invasion of Italy while serving in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Waterloo Baptist Church and the Long County Hunting Club.
Mr. Day is survived by his wife of 62 years: Virginia W. Day of Irwinville; sons and daughters-in-law: Don (Janice) Day of The Rock, GA and Jerry (Linda) Day of Tifton; daughter & son-in-law: Deborah Day (Terry L.) Hester of Irwinville; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister: Christine Clements of Crawfordville, NC. He was preceded in death by a son and a grandson.
