Anthony Joseph ‘Tony’ Coviello, III, 91 of Tewksbury, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Virginia H. (Machado) Coviello, who passed away in 2020 after nearly sixty years of marriage.
He was born in Boston on October 6, 1933, a son of the late Anthony Coviello II and the late Antoinette (Erricolo) Coviello. Raised in East Boston, he attended the local schools until his family relocated to Tewksbury in 1945. He went on to graduate from the Center School in Tewksbury before earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Franklin College and New Hampshire College.
Mr. Coviello was drafted into the United States Army serving in Korea until his honorable discharge.
Tony worked as a Senior Designer at Tekscan, where he specialized in designing sensors until his retirement. Earlier in his career, he worked as a civil engineer for many years and was involved in the construction of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. Over the course of his career, he was awarded multiple patents for his innovations, including electronics used in shoe manufacturing, the space shuttle, and professional athletics. He had a passion for technology and always kept up with the latest innovations, from computers in earlier years to cell phones more recently, enjoying being on the cutting edge.
Affectionately known as “Asiago Tony” by his friends at Donna’s Donuts, where he spent time daily, he was well-loved in his community. In his younger years, he coached Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. A devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, Tony also enjoyed oil painting and participating in Revolutionary War reenactments. He had a passion for traveling—always by road—and spent many years with his camper trailer at Baxter Lake Recreation Area in Rochester, NH. Tony was a communicant of St. Dorothy Church in Wilmington and also served on the Tewksbury Board of Appeals for a time.
He is survived by his children, Anthony J. Coviello, IV and his wife, Debbie (Gluszczak) of Clinton, MA, Ret. Tewksbury Police Sgt. Christopher J. Coviello and his wife, Leigh (Witmyer) of Dracut, Paula V. Erskine and her husband, Keith of Tewksbury, Kenn T. Coviello and his wife, Sabrina (James) of Andover; and nine grandchildren, Victoria A. (Coviello) Geier and her husband, Jacob of Clinton, Christopher Coviello and his wife, Francesca Gervasi of Topsfield, Courtney Coviello of Dracut, Olivia Erskine of Dallas, TX, John Erskine of Tewksbury, Sunny and Julia Coviello of Andover, Matthew Fontaine of Dracut, and Crystal Hayward and her husband Derek of Lowell.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother the late John Francis Coviello of Florida.
On Wednesday, September 24, 2025 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 8:30-10 a.m. at Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury 978-851-2061.
His funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m. at St. Dorothy’s Church, 11 Harnden Street, Wilmington, MA. Burial will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery.
