Obituary

LACONIA ---- Lawrence “Larry” Joseph Alting, 80, of North Main Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, with his loved ones by his side.

Larry was born on October 30, 1944, in Winthrop, MA, the son of the late Clarence Alting and Rose (Murphy) Alting.

Larry grew up in Billerica, MA. He was a natural athlete. He played football and basketball in high school, but he excelled in baseball. At 6’6” tall he was a formidable figure on the pitching mound. He was recognized with many awards for his athletic skills.

After high school, he joined his step-dad in the trucking business. He retired from that profession after 20 years. With a young family and a desire to use his creative side, he started a construction business, Alting & Sons Construction. Along came an opportunity to build homes in the Lakes Region and the family relocated from Merrimack, NH, to Alton, NH.

Alton very quickly became home. Larry got elected to the planning board as well as the school board. He was very proud to have been on the school board throughout the entire building process of Prospect Mountain High School.

Skiing had always been a favorite activity so Gunstock was a favorite spot. He quickly connected with the ski school and became an instructor. He loved helping new skiers get their “feet under them.”

Larry was passionate about many varied things. He loved riding his Harley, fly fishing and historical information. But his greatest joy came from family. He oozed pride and love for his two sons. In later life he was blessed with two grandsons, which provided him with great joy.

He is survived by his loving wife Diane Alting; sons Daniel Alting and his wife Lisa Gantos, and Chris Alting and his wife Allyson; sister Margaret Adderley; and grandsons Anderson and Weston. Larry had a large group of friends that he acquired as he traveled through his life. These friends were appreciated and very much loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Gilford Community Church, 19 Potter Hill Road, Gilford, NH. All are welcome and since Larry wore shorts year-round, causal dress is requested. Please be prepared to share
Larry’s stories because this is truly a celebration of his full life.

A Graveside Burial will follow at New Riverside Cemetery, Alton, NH.

A reception will be held at Patrick’s Pub 18 Wiers Road, Gilford, NH.
