Formerly of Andover, Leo Doherty died September 6 2025 at the High Pointe Hospice House.
Born in Boston, son of the late Henry and Catherine Doherty, graduated from the Boston Technical High School. He attended the Mass Electric School, Northern Essex Community College, and Northeastern University. He served as an aviation Mechanic in the Naval Reserves, and as a Drill Instructor in the Marine Camps during the Korean War.
After discharge, Leo worked as an electrical apprentice for AT&T, a Missile System Test leader at the Bethlehem Steel Quincy Shipyard, and retired as a Senior Engineering Writer and Project Manager for the Raytheon company. At Raytheon, Leo worked on a variety of projects including the Apollo Mission Control Center, Tactom Missile System, oil and gas research and production, and the Patriot Missile System.
Leo is predeceased by his childhood sweetheart Grace, brothers Henry and Edward, and sister Ann Fahey. Leo’s children include son Stephen Doherty and wife Maura of Haverhill, son Michael Doherty and Sandra Perry of Sandown, and daughter Patricia Bronson of Plaistow. Leo’s grandchildren include Amanda Bronson, David Bronson, Megan Demins, Erin Burrows, Sean Doherty, and Jennifer Callahan. Leo also had 6 great grandchildren, Charlotte Callahan, Tripp Callahan, Freddy Callahan, Nolan Demins, Carson Demins, and Kellan Demins.
Leo was a member of the American Legion Post 8 of Andover, as Post Commander, Adjutant, and Honor Guard commander serving on many veteran’s military funerals. He was a longtime member of the Merrimack Valley Golf Club, served on the Andover Council of Aging, Chairman of the Building Committee, and was active on many community projects. After retirement, Leo wrote novels, studied music, and began a flying career.
Leo's funeral service will be celebrated in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Friday, September 12, 2025 at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held on Friday in the funeral home, prior to the service, from 9 to 11 AM. Interment will be held in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
