Stanley Gordon Winchester was born on February 7, 1929 in Brockton, Massachusetts, the oldest son of the late Cecil and Louise (Plouffe) Winchester. He grew up in Pembroke, Massachusetts. From an early age, Stanley was known for his strong character, sense of responsibility, and determination – qualities that guided him throughout his remarkable life.
Stan was an avid golfer, playing the game he loved well into his 90s, until the age of 94. He was a true sports enthusiast who never missed cheering on his favorite teams – the Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox. A jack of all trades, he also enjoyed time in the kitchen, baking and cooking for those he loved. Stanley was a man with friends everywhere he went, adored for his warmth, wit and generosity of spirit. Those who knew him treasured not only his friendship, but also the countless stories he shared from his life experiences and the vast knowledge he carried.
As a young man, Stan answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He served proudly in the Reconnaissance Unit, demonstrating courage, discipline and commitment to his fellow Marines. In 1949, he was honorably discharged, carrying with him lifelong pride in his service. While in the Marine Corps, Stan was also a starting guard on the USMC basketball team, combining his athletic talent with his love of competition.
Following his military service, Stanley attended Boston University, where he not only pursued his education, but also met the love of his life, the late June D. (Garo) Winchester. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love, respect and devotion to family.
Stanley began his career at Cox Engineering, now located in Randolph, Massachusetts, where he worked for most of his life. He served as both a job foreman and a purchasing agent, roles in which he demonstrated leadership, integrity and loyalty. He was also a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 17, reflecting his belief in hard work and solidarity with his colleagues.
Stanley’s devotion extended deeply to his faith. For many years, he was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Medford, Massachusetts, where he not only worshipped, but also gave generously of his time and talents. He served faithfully as the church Treasurer, helping to guide and support the parish community he cherished. His steady leadership and commitment left a lasting mark on the church family that meant so much to him.
In addition to his professional and spiritual life, Stanley devoted himself to fellowship and service. In 1967, he served as the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Samuel Crocker Lawrence Lodge – later known as the Mystic Valley Lodge in Arlington, Massachusetts – he was celebrated for his 65 years as a proud Master Mason. His time in Masonry was a source of honor, tradition and deep community connection.
Stanley also joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he continued his dedication to service, until retiring in 2007. He combined this with his passion for sailing, becoming a member of the Palmers Cove Yacht Club in Salem, Massachusetts. As Treasurer, he helped guide the club, while also enjoying the thrill and camaraderie of sailboat racing. A true sailor at heart, Stanley mastered the art of celestial navigation, a skill that reflected both his precision and his love of the sea.
He was also a lifelong member of The American Legion in Medford, Massachusetts, a lifelong member of VFW Post 2550 in Dunedin, Florida, and a lifelong member of the Medford-Malden Elks Lodge No. 915.
Of all his accomplishments, Stanley’s greatest pride was his family. He was the beloved husband of the late June D. (Garo) Winchester, devoted father of Lisa Catino and her husband Domenic Catino, and father to his late son, Stanley Winchester, Jr. He was the cherished grandfather of Michaela Griffith and her husband Daniel Griffith, Briana Catino and Domenic Catino, and the proud great-grandfather of James Griffith. Stanley also shared a special lifelong bond with his brother-in-law, Attorney Victor J. Garo of Medford, MA.
Stanley was predeceased by his sister, the late Joan (Winchester) Rollins, and his brothers, the late Richard Winchester and the late Robert Winchester.
Stanley’s life was defined by service – to his country, to his community, to his church, and to his family. He will be remembered as a man of strength, loyalty, vast knowledge, and unwavering love. His stories, his wisdom, and his kindness will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
