LIMINGTON-Edward “Ed” Arthur Weirick, Jr., age 81, passed away on Aug. 31, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 11, 1944, but grew up in Huntington Park, California where he moved with his family as a child.
A competitive athlete, Ed graduated from Huntington Park High School where he participated in gymnastics, football and track. He was also a talented artist from a young age, and attended college on an art scholarship.
Ed proudly served during the Vietnam War with the US Air Force, where he became a master welder, and his skills would be called upon, taking him around the country to repair and inspect B-52 Bombers.
After his service, Ed and his former wife settled in Maine, living most of his life in Ellsworth. Ed’s skill as a welder and an artist, love of antiques and classic cars came together as a business at his home on the Bucksport Rd. Ed was known by fellow welders for his skill and they would come to him for assistance with challenging jobs.
Along with welding, he restored antique cars, gas pumps, Coke coolers and more, often bringing them back to life by honoring their original appearance while adding his own signature style to them in the process.
Aside from his children and grand-kids, Ed’s pride and joy was his 1932 Ford Coupe, which he restored over fifty years ago. He restored it from the frame up, and added his own style along the way. He received many trophies and accolades for the coupe over the years. and it was not unusual to see a car come to a halt and pull into the yard to admire it.
Upon the passing of his own father, Ed brought home a pedal car that had been in storage. He restored it and gifted it to his son, Scott. From there, his passion for restoring pedal cars was born. He caught the eye of collectors around the country, including Hallmark Cards. They hired him to be the artist behind their line of Kiddie Car Classics, die cast miniatures of original pedal cars.
His daughter Dina’s lifelong love for Disney was inspired by his stories of his own childhood experiences.
Ed was an animal lover and had beloved pets (and grand-pets) his entire life.
Ed was raised to be of service to his community and instilled that in his children as well. He gave his time to local service organizations, he taught gymnastics at the YMCA, and always gave his time to others.
Upon moving to Limington, to be closer to his son and family, Ed quickly became a part of the community. He could not say enough about his church family, his crew at Sleepers and all the kindness shown to him every single day.
He is predeceased by his mother and father, Edward A. Weirick, Sr. and Frances Weirick, and his sister, Linda (Weirick) Contessotto.
Ed is survived by his children- Dina (Weirick) Knutson and her husband Andrew of Orlando, Florida, and Scott Weirick and his wife Marymargaret of Limington; seven grandchildren-Tyler, Anika, Ava, Julia, Rose, Lily and Scotty.
