Obituary

On Sunday evening, August 24, John “Yianni” Economou, age 60, passed away unexpectedly. He was the cherished only son of Christos and Maria Economou (Papageorgiou) and the devoted husband of nearly six years to Pamela Malvey-Economou of Leicester. John is also survived by his loving sister, Kalliopi “Popi” Economou; his mother, Maria; a large and beloved extended family both locally and in Greece; and an extraordinary circle of loyal friends. He was predeceased by his father, Christos, and his cousin, Spyro Economou, whose influence on his life was both pivotal and profound.
John lived most of his life in Worcester before settling in Leicester, where he spent his final years. A tireless worker, sharp businessman, and natural connector, he created opportunities for many through his sales and business acumen. Known affectionately as “Yianni,” he began his career at the family-owned Westborough House of Pizza, where he honed the customer service skills that would define his professional journey. He went on to lead several ventures, including serving as president of the Blue Jay Restaurant in Sutton. His final endeavor, a personal consulting firm, was perhaps his most passionate and adventurous undertaking, though sadly left unrealized.
John was a man who enjoyed everyone’s company and had a rare gift for bringing people together. He welcomed others into his home, his heart, and his lively conversations, always eager to share whatever he had. Known for his warm smile, easy laughter, and open heart, John made friends everywhere he went and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Above all, John found his greatest joy in his devoted wife, Pam. Her presence brought light and purpose to his life, and together they cultivated a relationship rooted in love, humility, and shared laughter. Their bond was radiant; an example of true partnership and affection.
A passionate sports fan, John rooted for all the local teams and was a longtime Boston Celtics season ticket holder. He was known to “coach” from the couch with a passion that rivaled the pros. He also had a deep love for music, especially live performances, and frequently hosted gatherings at his home, where friends enjoyed good food, great music, and his unmatched hospitality.
John’s life ended far too soon, but his legacy is one of generosity, connection, and joy. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.

A special note from John’s wife:
John was the joyful face and calming presence who brought everyone together and made every gathering special.
As his wife, I will always cherish his recent reflection of how truly blessed we were to have our beautiful home, yard, and pond; a place he was so proud to share with our family and wide circle of dear friends.
— Pam
