Obituary

Gerard Charles, born on May 11, 1949, in Port au Prince, Haiti, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2025, at Beth Israel Needham Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was the cherished son of Joseph Fanuel Charles, from Port a Piment, Haiti, and Emma Rodney Charles, born in Chardonnieres, Haiti.

Gerard dedicated his life to his faith, earning a certificate in Theology, which reflected his commitment to God and his community. He was a proud Haitian man who immigrated to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1974. As a prominent figure in the Haitian community, he became a beloved member of the Haitian Pentecostal Church congregations in both Massachusetts and Florida. Known for his love of music, Gerard found joy in playing the guitar during church services, using his talent to uplift others in worship.

With a sharp sense of style, Gerard was often seen dressed in suits and hats, embodying dignity and grace. His favorite scripture, Psalm 23— “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” —served as a guiding light throughout his life and a testament to his unwavering faith.

Gerard was a dedicated father to his three daughters: Geraldine Charles Oriwa, Ketsia Charles, and Talitha Charles. One of his proudest moments was walking his oldest daughter down the aisle in Kenya, a memory he cherished deeply. He also took great pride in being a grandfather to Tayshaun Charles (16), Keillan Ulyssee (12), Tegan Charles (10), Kaeden Ulysse (8), and Maximillian Oriwa (5).

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rose Charles Jean Baptiste, his dear sister Rose Roseme, three half-sisters including Marie Charles Payoute, and three brothers: Francois Charles, Arry Charles, and Yvon Charles. Additionally, he is survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, and friends. Gerard will be joining his sister Marie Roseme in heaven, where they will be reunited.

As a pastor and devoted member of his church, Gerard’s life was marked by his love for God and his family. He will be remembered for his strength, dedication, and the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him. His legacy of faith and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of Gerard’s life will be celebrated in the Evangelical Haitian Church of Somerville, 400 High St., Medford, on Saturday, September 13th, from 9 to 10:30, followed with a service at 10:30 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
