Paul F. Egersheim, age 94, of Brockton, passed away on August 23, 2025, with his loving family at his side. Raised in Roxbury, Paul moved to Brockton in 1966 with his wife. He was the sixteenth of seventeen children of the late William and Emma (Stahler) Egersheim and was predeceased by all his siblings.
Paul was the cherished husband of the late Marion V. Egersheim for 68 years. He was a devoted father to Lynn-Ann Marquis and her husband Dale of Salem, and to Scott Egersheim and his wife Kathleen of Uxbridge. He was a beloved Papa to Michelle, Derek, Breanna, and Kate Marquis, as well as Shannon Santes and her husband Josep. Paul was the great-grandfather of Leighton, Duke, Honor, and Adeline Santes, and a fond uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind caring neighbors, Carolyn and Phil Giordano and many friends.
From 1948 to 1950, Paul served in the US Army with the 1st Cavalry Division, playing snare drums in the division band. He valued his military experience deeply and maintained lifelong friendships with his fellow soldiers, organizing reunions in their hometowns—a tradition that also brought their families closer.
Paul was dedicated to supporting his family and at times held three jobs. He began his career at Boston Linotype Print Inc. and drove trucks for the Boston Herald. Eventually, he found his calling in the printing industry as a paper cutter for Bowne of Boston, working there until his retirement in the late eighties.
After retiring, Paul started collecting cans throughout Brockton, Abington, and Whitman—a pursuit that earned him the nickname “the Can Man.” He regarded those who gave him cans as his customers, many of whom became friends. In exchange, he would help by taking out their trash barrels. When he retired from can collecting in late 2022 after 30 years, Paul reflected that what he valued most was the opportunity to connect with people and hear their stories. He dearly missed the relationships he had built in the community.
Paul was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. If someone was in need, he would either personally assist or connect them with someone who could. His kindness touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Paul received care from Beacon Hospice for approximately one year. During this period, he interacted regularly with members of his care team, including Tara, Shayna, Lynn, Jackie, and Ben. He engaged with them as he would with friends rather than solely as medical professionals, and his family expresses appreciation for their efforts and the entire team from Beacon Hospice, particularly in the final weeks of his life.
Visiting hours will take place on Friday, September 5th from 4-7pm at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton. His funeral will be private; however, all are invited to the burial with Military Honors on Saturday, September 6th at 10am at Melrose Cemetery. Mourners are asked to gather at the main entrance of the cemetery where the funeral home staff will direct you to the gravesite.
