Obituary

Bernice A. Vieira, 86, of Westport, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Elsie (Medeiros)Theodore.

Bernice began her career as a stitcher in New Bedford and later found joy working for the Westport Community Schools in the school lunch program. She loved serving the students—often a little too much—and was always in “trouble” for her generosity and big heart. After retiring from the school department, Bernice devoted her time to babysitting her grandchildren, and eventually, her great-grandchildren. She and her beloved husband, the late Robert “Bob” Vieira, spent many happy years RVing around Cape Cod and Florida, embracing retirement to the fullest. She loved dancing, laughing, and being the life of every party. Bernice cherished time with her family above all. She loved being in the kitchen. She loved her sweets. She put the S in the word “stubborn”. She could often be found in her rocking chair with a coffee ice cream cone. She was a devoted wife, loving mother to her “girls,” and a proud grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter Michelle Rapoza, son-in-law Michael Metivier, and her grandchildren Katelyn Rapoza (and partner Beau), Tayla Rapoza, Ryan Rapoza (and wife Kayla), and Dylan Metivier. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren: Ryder, Weston, Kenlie, Zane, and Callum.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Robin Metivier and her grandmother whom she love and adored Eulilia Medeiros.

Bernice is also survived by her cousin Arlene Medeiros Rodrigues(Russell) and her in-laws: Richard Vieira, Antone Vieira, and Veronica Beaulieu along with godchildren, nieces and nephews which she adored.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the Westport Council on Aging’s Supportive Day Program and the compassionate staff who filled each day with fun, love, and kindness.

Special thanks to Sandi Mauk for her unwavering support through every chapter. As well as Sydnie Pierce and Shannon Smeaton for their love and caring for Bernice. The family would like to also thank Southcoast Hospice for all their love and support.
