SCARBOROUGH- Robert Carl Maurais, a devoted veteran, passionate entrepreneur, and cherished family and community influence, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 16th, at 2:45 PM at the veteran's home in Scarborough. He was 96 years old.
After a proud military career in the United States Air Force, Robert made his home in Ogunquit, Maine, where he remained for the rest of his life. It was there that he met his lifetime partner and the love of his life, the legendary Richard Perkins. Their extraordinary partnership lasted over 70 years- a true love story for the ages-marked by deep devotion and shared vision.
Together, Robert and Richard owned and operated several highly successful restaurants, including "Poor Richard's Tavern," "Poor Richard's Pub," and "The Tavern at Clay Hill Farm." Richard was the vibrant, flamboyant star of their establishments and the community, but Robert was the steadfast backbone meticulous, dedicated, and committed to excellence. Their professional and personal lives were deeply intertwined, demonstrating the power of love and partnership. Following Richard's passing, Robert, a devout Christian, once shook his fist at Richard's portrait, exclaiming, 'It should have been me instead of you," revealing the depth of his love and enduring grief.
Richard & Robert were no-nonsense Yankees, teaching those around them the importance of attention to detail, doing things the right way, and valuing integrity. Their influence reached many.......
The Kings, the Hoovers, the Towers the Bevins, Intinarelli, Weare, Ciampa, Claytorn, McNamara, and Moulton among many others. Through their example, they imparted invaluable life lessons about diligence, perseverance, and doing the job right the first time.
Robert passed quietly and peacefully, with his hand in his beloved Richard's portrait-a final testament to their eternal bond.
A mass in his honor will be held at St. Mary's in Wells at a later date. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and integrity— an inspiration to all who know him. Rest in peace, Robert.
