Obituary

Russell F. “Sully” Sullivan Sr.

Russell F. Sullivan Sr., affectionately known as “Sully,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, just one day shy of his 99th birthday, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on August 18, 1926, in Boston, MA to James and Eleanor Virginia Sullivan.

Before settling in Tewksbury, MA, where he made his home for the past 65 years, Sully lived in Somerville, MA. In Tewksbury, he built a life rooted in love, family and hard work. He is survived by his devoted wife of 74 years, Marilyn Sullivan, and their children: Joanne Smith of Pepperell, MA, Karen Maciejewski and her partner Jon “Bucky” Dolence of Charlestown, MA & Walpole, NH, Doreen Dixon and her late husband Dave Dixon of Lowell, MA, Kerry Carlini and her husband Steven Carlini of Hampton, NH & Boynton Beach, FL and Russell Sullivan Jr. and his wife Stacey Ouellette Sullivan of Bristol, RI. Sully’s legacy continues through his 17 grandchildren and their loving spouses, 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild who will forever cherish his presence in their lives.

He is also survived by his sister Ann Meehan of Worcester, MA and his sister-in-law Sister Joan Mehigan of Ipswich, MA. He was predeceased by his siblings Eleanor Riselli, Theresa Connell, John, James, Richard, Paul and Mary Sullivan and is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Sully honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his service, he became a respected member of Local 4, where he worked as a crane operator for over 40 years. His strong work ethic and dedication were matched only by his love for family.

Sully found joy in life’s simple pleasures. For many years, he and Marilyn spent their winters in Florida soaking up the sunshine, walking the beach and enjoying time with family and friends. Well into his late 80s, he insisted on driving himself to Florida each winter before finally allowing his sons-in-law to take the wheel. He loved pool days with his grandchildren, tending to his lawn and gardens and keeping his home in perfect shape. He also enjoyed reading history books, playing cards and took great pride in outplaying his family at poker. Above all, he treasured time with his family, especially at the beach where countless memories were made.

Sully’s strength, stubborn spirit and gentle love will be remembered by all who knew him. His life was one of devotion to his family, friends and work.
