LACONIA ---- Beloved husband and father, Douglas Milton Engelsen, 96, went to his eternal home with the Lord on Thursday, August 7, 2025, in Laconia, NH.
Born on May 31, 1929, in Hopkins, MN, he was the son of the late Minnie Meixner Engelsen and Gerald Engelsen.
Doug honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954, at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, WA, as a mechanic for the B-36. He rose to staff officer and crew chief of 7 members.
He attended the University of Minnesota-St. Paul from 1954 – 1958, graduating with a B.S. in Forestry. During this time, he met his future wife, Mayme Snyder Lundin. They married on August 20, 1955 in Mankato, MN.
Doug had a lifetime career with the US Forest Service: Assistant Ranger, Ottawa National Forest, Iron River, MI; District Ranger, Mark Twain National Forest, Winona, MO; Director of Timber Management & Fire Prevention, White Mountain National Forest, Laconia, NH. He finished his career in Bethel, ME, director of the Timber Management Project. He retired in 1984 at age 55.
Anyone who knew Doug, knows how much he loved to hunt and fish. Throughout his life, he enjoyed being in the woods with his bow, muzzle loader, and rifle. Late in the day, he could often be found fishing on Lake Winnipesaukee. Doug also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, skiing until he was 86, and watching the Patriots play.
Doug was predeceased by Mayme Snyder Engelsen, his wife of almost 60 years. Survived by children: Douglas Lundin (Cheri), Kimberly Engelsen Sanborn (Paul), Patrice Engelsen Jenkins (David), Laurel Engelsen Rockney (Bennett), Todd Engelsen (Leslie), Clark Engelsen (Christine), Craig Engelsen (Kristen); and 23 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Doug accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at 8 years old. While serving in the Air Force, he joined First Baptist Church in Spokane, WA and was a volunteer leader for the jr. high youth group. At the University of MN, he served as president of the Intervarsity College Christian organization. Doug has been an active member of South Baptist Church, Laconia, NH, since 1971.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Gilford, NH.
