Obituary

Alexander Kainamisis, 72 of Cambridge, MA passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on Friday, August 1, 2025 with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Helen (Kontos) Kainamisis who he married in 1978, spending 47 years of marriage together.

He was born on April 12, 1953 in Thermi Thessaloniki, Greece and was a son of the late Gianni and Parthena (Komatidou) Kainamisis. He was raised and educated in Greece, served in the military, and got married before coming to the United States with hopes of pursuing the American dream, settling in Cambridge, where they raised their family. In 2001 he became an American Citizen.

In the 1980's he worked in the shoe manufacturing industry, cutting ballet shoes for some time before, then moved onto working in facilities management at Mass General and then at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, until illness forced his retirement from Mass General. He continued to work full time at Mass Art until very recently.

He enjoyed fishing, in particular saltwater striped bass fishing, especially off shore in Lynn. When he was not helping out his son at his repair shop he enjoyed watching him drag race. Everyone loved him, he was laid back, kind to everyone, generous, always quick to help, especially family.

In addition to his wife, Helen of Cambridge, he is survived by two children, Virginia Kainamisis of Lowell, and Jonathan Kainamisis and his wife, Sandra Caban of Lowell; and his grandchildren, Alexander and Evander.

He is also survived by his sister, Athanasia Barkitzis of Ptolemaida, Greece; his nieces and nephews including Grigori Barkitzis, Gianni Barkitzis, Maria Spitzer, Evan Spitzer, Tina Georgiopoulos, and Sammy Georgiopoulos; and his sister in law, Anna Kontos of Watertown.

He was predeceased by his brother, the late Stelios Kainamisis.
