Margaret Anne “Margie” Maris (née Smith), of Fitzgerald, Georgia, passed away on August 1, 2025, in her hometown. She was 73 years old.
Born on March 10, 1952, in Fitzgerald, Georgia to Dr. J.E. Smith and Frances Anne Shelton Smith, Margie spent her life deeply rooted in the community that shaped her. She graduated from Fitzgerald High School and went on to pursue a degree in Medical Technology at the Medical College of Georgia. Margie was an active volunteer in the community throughout her life, serving as a leader for Cub Scout Pack #875. Her dedication to helping others was evident throughout both her professional and personal life.
Margie was a devoted member of Central Wesleyan Church, where she found spiritual strength and a sense of belonging. She volunteered at several church functions and also participated in the Review Club for many years. Her faith remained a guiding light throughout her life.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Wayne S. Maris; his sons, Joseph Maris and Jeffrey Maris and their families; and her brother, John Ed Smith and his family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Beth Haase and beloved stepmother Margaret Wixson Smith.
Margie had a deep love for nature and the outdoors. She found joy in horseback riding, birdwatching, and spending time at the beach—activities that brought her peace and happiness throughout the years. Margie had a deep love for animals and always had a dog by her side.
Her memory will be cherished by those who knew her and shared in the warmth of her presence. May her memory bring comfort to all who mourn her passing.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Central Wesleyan Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the sanctuary. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
