Obituary

In Loving Memory of Paul Michael Roney
June 13, 1947 — July 29, 2025

Paul Michael Roney, 78, passed away on July 29, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 13, 1947, in Portland, Maine, Paul was the son of V. Edward Roney and Elizabeth Roney. He grew up on a farm in Lancaster, New Hampshire, where he developed his love for the outdoors and his lifelong sense of adventure.

Paul proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972, earning distinction as a decorated Vietnam War Veteran. In 1970, he married Diane Blyth Roney, with whom he shared countless beautiful memories until her passing in 2022. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter and family.

A skilled craftsman and outdoorsman at heart, Paul built their family home on Watchic Lake, where they raised their two sons. He loved nothing more than being on the water—sailing, boating and offshore fishing. Summers were filled with water skiing, tubing and joyful family gatherings at the lake. In the winters, Paul embraced skiing and snowmobiling, always finding ways to bring adventure and fun to those around him.

Paul worked as the Code Enforcement Officer for Standish, Gorham and Windham; Facilities Director for the Gorham School Department; and lastly the Facilities Director for Thornton Academy; creating lasting and lifelong friendships along the way.

Paul’s quick wit, mischievous humor, and love for practical jokes brought light to every room he entered. He had a gift for making people laugh and an unmatched ability to turn ordinary moments into cherished memories. He was a skilled builder, a devoted animal lover, and a man whose presence could never be ignored.

Paul is survived by his sons, Patrick and Travis Roney, both of Standish, Maine; Travis’ wife Megan Roney, their son Grady Paul Roney, and his beloved dog, Ruger. Grady Paul was truly the light of Paul’s last two years and undoubtedly kept him fighting as strongly as he did.

He is treasured with love by his brother Edward Roney, his sister (and best friend) Karen Parker, her husband Steve Parker and their families. He will be deeply missed by countless loving nieces, nephews, friends and all those who were lucky enough to know him.

Paul will be remembered always for his warmth, his humor, and the joy he brought to every situation and every life he touched. He will be watching down upon his loved ones with a smile as they continue the traditions he helped create in the lake home that he built.

Paul’s services and burial will be held privately with immediate family only.
