Obituary

In Loving Memory of J. Gary Burkhead
June 19, 1941 – July 18, 2025

J. Gary Burkhead, a visionary leader in the financial services industry and a dedicated advocate for biomedical research and education, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, at the age of 84.

Gary was born on June 19, 1941, in Little Rock Arkansas to James and Lillian (Martin) Burkhead. He lived a life defined by integrity, intellectual rigor, and an enduring commitment to service. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, laying the foundation for a distinguished career that would leave an indelible mark on the world of finance.

Gary retired as Vice Chairman and board member of FMR Corporation, the parent company of Fidelity Investments. Over his tenure at Fidelity, he served in numerous leadership roles including President of the Fidelity Personal Investments and Brokerage Group, President of Fidelity Institutional Group, President of Fidelity Management & Research Company, and President of Fidelity Investments Institutional Services Company, Inc. His strategic vision and steady leadership helped shape Fidelity into a global financial powerhouse.

In addition to his corporate leadership, Gary was deeply engaged in advancing science and public service. He served as a trustee of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and held a board position at The Scripps Research Institute, one of the nation’s premier biomedical research organizations. He also served on the boards of the New York Stock Exchange, the Securities Industry Association, the Financial Analysts Federation, and the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts. Gary was honored with a presidential appointment to the Business Advisory Council to the APEC nations, reflecting his global influence and trusted expertise.

After retiring, Gary devoted himself fully to the game of golf, a lifelong passion that brought him joy, discipline, and deep friendships. He could always be found teeing off promptly at 8am, cherishing every round whether in Florida or on Cape Cod. He relished the camaraderie, the challenge, and the constant pursuit of improvement, often training with friends and respected coaches. For Gary, golf was more than a sport, it was a daily ritual, a source of growth, and a true love that enriched his later years.

A man of strong Christian faith, Gary lived his life guided by principles of compassion, integrity, and humility. He was a proud member of the Order of Saint John and was knighted for his lifelong commitment to service and charitable work.

Above all, Gary was a family man. He shared 60 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Dawn (Priem) Burkhead, who stood by his side with love and strength throughout life’s journey. Together they raised a beautiful family who brought them great pride and joy: his daughter, Pamela (Burkhead) Smith and his son Scott Burkhead. He was a devoted father-in-law to Lindsay Burkhead, and a proud and loving grandfather to Christopher Smith (21), Jack Burkhead (17), Sage Burkhead (14), Stella Burkhead (11), and Delilah Burkhead(8).

Gary’s family will forever hold dear the simple, meaningful moments they shared with him. His wife will remember their daily ritual of dining out and watching the latest movies together, savoring good conversation, great food, and the joy of simply being together. His son will remember their shared curiosity, diving into the latest iPhone features or marveling at new advances in AI. His daughter will remember riding her bike beside him as he ran through the streets of New York City, always keeping pace. His grandchildren will remember the joy of mini golfing and teeing up alongside him, their biggest supporter on and off the course. All of us will remember his impeccable style, especially his colorful cashmere sweaters that reflected his warmth and charm. We will also cherish the memories of spending the holidays together, gatherings filled with laughter, love, and the simple joy of being in each other’s company.

A service in celebration of Gary’s life will be held at Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach on October 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by a gathering for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in Gary’s memory to: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168, by phone at 1-800-525-4669 or dana-farber.org/give. Gifts may be directed to Dr. Ken Anderson’s multiple myeloma research.

Gary Burkhead will be remembered for his profound contributions to the financial world, his passionate support of scientific discovery, and his unwavering love for his family. His legacy will continue to inspire all who have had the privilege to have known him.
