Hiram, Maine – With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Albert Cooper Jr., a man whose laughter and kindness will be deeply missed. Joe was born on October 7, 1962, to Joseph and Regina Cooper of Portland, Maine and passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family, after a brief but fiercely fought battle with Glioblastoma.
A 1981 graduate of Westbrook High School, Joe dedicated 24 years of his life to serving in the United States Army as an intelligence analyst, medic, and medical recruiter. His commitment to service took him around the globe, touching countless lives along the way. After his military retirement he went on to continue his career and education in public service, retiring as the City of Old Orchard Beach's Public Works Director in 2022. As testament to his dedication of lifelong learning, he completed his master’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety in 2021.
Joe lived to serve. He was a beacon of generosity and support in his community, proudly serving as a Saco firefighter for over 20 years and until recently remained actively involved with the Hiram Fire Department. As busy as he was, Joe also knew how to have fun and enjoyed camping at Sebago Lake, gold panning in the Swift River and many hours spent on his tractor. Until his death, Joe was currently completing work on their new home on Stanley Pond, creating a little slice of heaven for his family to enjoy for years to come.
As a beloved husband, father, and friend, Joe leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Dawn, and their four children: Jessica, Philip, Millicent, and Victoria. He also leaves behind three adored grandchildren, Jamie, Teagan and Kora, sisters Pam Lunn, Kim Dijkoff and lifelong best friends Dave Demers and Dan Harmon and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was a true family man with the extraordinary ability to connect with others. His humor and willingness to lend a hand made a lasting impression on everyone he met. The absence of his unmistakable presence will be missed by all who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on his Birthday October 7th, 2025, in Hiram Maine. For details, please reach out to the family.
