George Donald "Don" Newman, a resident of Charlestown, passed away on July 15, 2025, at the age of 93.
He was born on March 23, 1932 in Needham, MA; the son of George and Frances (Johnston) Newman. he grew up in Weston and graduated from Weston High School class of 1950. He attended Brown University and graduated in 1955.
Don began working for Zurbach Steel after graduating from Brown, and remained in the steel industry for the rest of his life. He was still selling steel as a manufacturer's representative for TPC Metals Inc. and Lyons Slitting until his death. He loved being a salesman and would delight his customers, often bringing them a plant and doing a dance, complete with a song.
Don was the husband of Jillian (Spates) Newman, who shared a deep love for over 40 years. They traveled around the world and lived in the Back Bay, and later settled in Charlestown.
Don loved to travel and made the occassional trip to Foxwoods and Encore. He loved to sing a little tune, do a dance and enjoy life.
He is predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Skip Corwin, and his brother and sister-in-law Bob and Bee Newman. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law John and Pam Sothern, nieces and nephews; Deborah Flanagan, Laurie Loomis, Jennifer and John Rice, Jackie Kukesh, Stephen Newman and Lynn and Nate Rockwell.
A graveside memorial service will be held in the fall.
