Obituary

WEST SPRINGFIELD - Michael J. Wood, Sr., 71, of West Springfield and a former longtime resident of Pittsfield, was Called Safely Home on Monday, July 14, 2025. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by his loving wife, Ellen, and his loving son, Father Michael. He was born in Pittsfield on November 30, 1953, a beloved son of the late Theodore Marshall Wood and Therese Mary (Reilly) Wood. He was raised in Pittsfield, graduated from Taconic High School in Pittsfield and moved to West Springfield around 2022. He was last employed as a paper manufacturer at the Crane Paper Company in Dalton. He previously was employed in the print shop for the Marian Fathers in Stockbridge and later at Chemex Coffee in Pittsfield. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Pittsfield. He was a communicant of Saint Joseph Church in Pittsfield and recently a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield. During his leisure time, he enjoyed reading, genealogy, archaeology, and science fiction, including Star Trek and Star Wars. Most of all, he loved his family and his many friends. He leaves his loving wife and soul mate, Ellen J. (Murphy) Wood. They were married on June 22, 1979 at Saint Joseph Church in Pittsfield and were blessed with over 46 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving son, Father Michael J. Wood, Jr., Pastor of Mary, Mother of Hope Church in East Springfield; his five dear siblings, John Wood of North Carolina, Mary Parker of Adams, Kathleen Regalmann of Pittsfield, Daniel Wood and Richard Wood, both of Pittsfield; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister, Nancy Wood. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday morning, July 21, 2025 at 10 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. His Committal and Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 222 Pecks Road, Pittsfield, MA 01201. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA 01104.
