Martin J. "Marty" Flynn, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Tuesday August 22, 2006 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a lengthy illness. He was 81 years old.
Marty was born in Boston on October 22, 1924. He grew up in Charlestown, where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1943. Following his graduation, Marty enlisted into the United States Army and served during World War 2. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of corporal and recieved the Silver Star for his meritorious service.
In 1950, Marty began working for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority as a mechanic. He was a member of the M.B.T.A. Union Local # 264. He retired in 1985.
Marty was one of the founders of the Charlestown Pop Warner Organization and was also active in Charlestown Little League Association for several years.He was also a member of Bunker Hill Council # 62, K. of C. , Malden Irish American Club and The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association.
Marty is the beloved husband of 51 years to Mary E. (Maguire) Flynn. He is the devoted father of Marybeth Giovanucci and her husband Glen of West Roxbury, Janet Sidlauskas and her husband Chris of West Roxbury, Martin J. Flynn Jr. and his wife Juli-Ann of Braintree. He is the loving grandfather of 10 grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Paul Flynn of Everett, Helen M. Hayward of Arlington, Lorraine Conroy of Quincy, Margaret Bowser of Medford and the late John and Joseph Flynn.
Mart's Funeral will be held on Friday August 25, 2006 at 9 am. from The Carr Funeral Home 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Marty will be held on Thursday August 24, 2006 from 4 to 8 pm. Burial will take place at Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne, Mass.
