Francis Cannon Rowland, 95, died peacefully in his home Sunday August 20, 2006, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Virginia Seabrook (Nelson) Rowland; they were married for 71 years.
Francis was Chief Engineer with Revere Copper & Brass until his retirement in 1973.
A Mattapoisett native and history lover, Francis was Founding President of the Mattapoisett Historical Society and museum, where a room has been named in his honor. He penned and led historical walks around town and gave regular talks and glass slide shows on Mattapoisett history. He was also a member of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society. Francis was a member of the Nature Conservancy and was a Steward for the Robinson-Gilmore Preserve. He was a member of the Machacum Club, the Mayflower Society, the Pythagorean Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and was a High Priest in the Fairhaven Royal Arch Chapter. He was also a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and could often be found rebuilding antique clocks in the basement. After retirement he often wiled away the hours woodworking in “Grampa’s Shop.” Francis and his wife were known as extraordinary craftspeople who made wooden toys, Nantucket baskets, and other items. They passed this make-it-yourself attitude on to their children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife; a son William Rowland and his wife Sandra; a daughter Susan Watjen and her husband Kenneth; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who deeply feel the loss of their grandpa; and his dedicated home health aides.
There will be a graveside service at Cushing Cemetery in Mattapoisett on Saturday August 26th, 2006 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Mattapoisett Historical Society, P.O. Box 535, Mattapoisett, MA 02739 or the Mattapoisett Public Library, P.O. Box 475, Mattapoisett, MA 02739.
