Obituary

Jonathan W. Pierce, 65
Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Jonathan W. Pierce, age 65, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on July 9, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Martha J. (Nilson) Pierce to whom he was wed for 47 years.

Born in Fort Dix, NJ, on August 2, 1959, he was the loving son of the late Robert H. Pierce, and the late Nancy Ryan Pierce.

Jon moved to Mansfield in the summer of 1967 just prior to entering third grade at Roland Green School. He was a 1977 graduate of Mansfield High School. Jon began work as a bank teller at BayBank United the day after his high school graduation. He was employed at BayBank United for ten years before taking a position at Avon Cooperative Bank in Avon MA, where he worked for 31 years. Jon volunteered in the community of Avon by serving on the school council, reading to children in the elementary school, and teaching high school students about the importance of saving money, managing a bank account, funding college and applying for bank loans and credit cards. Jon loved community banking and everyone he worked with along the way. Jon met many people throughout his 41-year career, and he truly cherished every friendship he made. Above all, he especially loved his customers. He was often known to call Martha and tell her he would be a little late getting home because he was stopping at a customer’s house who had left their favorite baseball cap in the lobby, or someone who forgot their ATM card on the counter, or he wanted to stop at a customer’s house so they could sign some papers because they were unable to get to the bank. A local newspaper once referred to Jon as the George Bailey of Avon Cooperative, which everyone who knew him was spot on.

Jon was very musical. He began singing in fifth grade in the glee club, which was followed by the MHS Concert Choir, church choirs, and in recent years he sang with the Peter Williams Chorale Society. Jon also played the trumpet during his school years. He sang or played his trumpet at many church services and weddings. Jon especially enjoyed acting in plays and musicals with the Mansfield Music and Arts Society. He could not only sing and harmonize with anyone but he was also quite funny on the stage!

More than anything else in life, Jon loved being a husband and dad. He was completely devoted to raising his two sons alongside Martha. Jon loved coaching the boys in little league, camping, hiking, and attending every school concert and activity the boys were in. Jon even became a Mansfield Band Parent just so he could follow them around to parades, sport events, and band competitions, whether it was freezing cold or raining. Jon’s favorite dad role was as a volunteer on the light crew running a spotlight in the back of the MHS auditorium for all the school plays the boys participated in. Jon shined a spotlight on hundreds of MHS students for over ten years but there was never any doubt that he was most proud to shine a spotlight on his own two sons.

Jon is also survived by his loving and devoted sons, Jonathan W. Pierce, Jr. and his wife Doreen Moscaritolo of Sharon, and David B. Pierce and his wife Moira Whitty Pierce of Attleboro. He was the adoring and cherished “Papa” of Charlie V. Walters, Levi R. Walters, Lillian A. Pierce and Rowan H. Pierce, for whom Jon most reveled in the role of chauffeur. He would go at the drop of a hat to pick up one or several kids and friends at school and drive them to music lessons, basketball, or gymnastics. If someone called, Papa showed up. He was the dear brother of his late brother, Robert A. Pierce, Charles E. Pierce, the late Lauri B. Baptiste, Kristina K. Bizier, and Benjamin R. Pierce. He is also survived by his brother in laws, sister in laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. And last, but not least, he will be forever missed by his dog, Scout.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 212 Main Street, Foxborough MA on Tuesday, July 15th, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. His funeral will be held at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 212 Main Street, Foxborough MA on Wednesday, July 16th, at 11:00 A.M.

Jon especially loved traveling with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends, and he known to be a total foodie. He enjoyed any cuisine that was placed in front of him. He would never pass up the chance to taste one or two local brews or sip a glass of wine while sitting at a sidewalk café. Jon was always very humble and thankful that he was privileged to enjoy a life that was full of blessings. In honor of Jon, his family invites you to give a donation to the Mansfield Food Pantry at 15 West Street, Mansfield MA or www.mansfieldfoodpantry.org
