John Abraham Saul, III, (Johnny), passed away to be with God on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, due to complications from a long-term illness. He was born to John A. Saul, Jr., and Geraldine Flora Saul on October 22, 1953, in Roanoke, Virginia. John was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Reva and Foy Hawks; brothers-in-law, Lyndon Carr and Malcolm Kevin Anderson; and nephew, Kevin James Anderson. John is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Hawks, sisters, Sheryl Carr and Rosetta Anderson, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A life-long resident of Roanoke, John graduated from Cave Spring High School in 1972. He studied mechanical engineering technology at Virginia Western Community College and was an expert mechanical technician in the fields of plumbing and heating and air conditioning. John helped with many home improvement projects and could trouble shoot most malfunctions in home appliances or equipment. He served as the emergency go-to for countless people throughout his life and often shared the story of meeting his wife, Judy, by repeatedly repairing her suspiciously extinguished pilot light. His steady wisdom and kindness in offering his competent help was a gift to friends and neighbors as well as his family along the east coast.
An ardent music lover, John played both the upright bass and acoustic guitar. He taught himself how to play and over the years became a reliable musician, keeping the beat with several local bands at a variety of venues, including the Galax Fiddler’s Convention. He typically traveled with a guitar and loved sitting around making music with other musicians and often entertained family with his musical talents.
John was a living example of the power of positivity. In his lifetime, he confronted 7 different types of cancer and lived with a rare MEN1 cancer diagnosis for over 47 years. He never allowed these medical challenges to dominate his identity or spirit. He was grounded in his values and thus lived simply, enjoying his life. Other pastimes included nature activities, woodworking, yardwork, making a good fire, and especially grilling and sitting on the deck with his dog Princess Chole and friends/family. He was a devoted husband, son, brother and uncle-- taking care of his parents and his in-laws as they aged. His integrity and kindness enriched the lives of so many, and his memory will be a blessing to all who knew him.
Memorial arrangements will be forthcoming.
