Obituary

Mary Alice (Taylor) Laffargue, 90, of Noank, formerly of North Stonington and West Mystic, died Sunday morning at The Westerly Hospital after a brief illness.

Mary was born in the home of her maternal grandparents, Jennie and James Ryley on Broadway in Mystic, the daughter of Alexander and Lucy Taylor. She was a 1930 graduate of the former Chapman Technical Institite. During her younger years, she was an accomplished athelete and won an award in jumping, something nearly unheard of in those days. During World War II, Mary was an active participant in the Red Cross.

She lived a good portion of her life at Willow Point in West Mystic and was employed at Rollinson’s and later George Conklin’s market.

She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Mystic and for the past few years was affiliated with the Noank Baptist Church. She was an avid bird watcher and travelled as far as Alaska to witness ecotic Puffins.

Her husband of 58 years, Robert Laffargue, died in 1993.

Mary leaves a daughter, Kathryn A. Lewis of Mystic, a son, Michael of Florida, a sister, Lucy Howell of Noank, 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her special devoted friend, Montigue “Monty” Miller.

Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a Graveside Funeral Service at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic on Wednesday at 11:30am. Visitation is private. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Noank Baptist Church or the First United Methodist Church, Mystic.

The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic is assisting the family.

Mary's family also wishes to thank all of the nurses and staff at The Westerly Hospital for their loving care and concern during her stay.
