Obituary

“US“BostonRetired Boston Police Officer, Vincent D. "Vinny" Kelly, a 52-year resident of Milton and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 95 years of age.

Vinny was born in Boston on June 14, 1930, a son of the late Daniel W. Kelly and Agnes V. (Murphy) Kelly. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated at St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948. Vinny enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on February 19, 1952, and served his country valiantly and with courage during the Korean Conflict where he was wounded in action on July 24, 1953, and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on February 20, 1954, with the rank of Private First Class. Vinny was appointed to the Boston Police Department January 13, 1960 and began his career at District 9 in Roxbury where he worked for several years and was then transferred to District 14 in Brighton where he worked for many years and retired from there on July 6, 1995. For his valiant efforts on the Boston Police Department, Vinny was awarded the Walter Scott Medal in 1963.

Vinny was a member of the Boston Police Patrolman's Association, Boston Police Relief Association, Charlestown Schoolboys Association and Charlestown V.F.W. Post # 26. In his spare time, Vinny enjoyed shopping and most importantly in his life, he cherished the special moments he was able to share with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Vinny is the beloved husband of the late Margaret B. (Mulry) Kelly. He is the devoted father of retired Boston Police Detective Stephen G. Kelly and his wife Helen, Edward F. Kelly and his wife Pamela and the late Michael T. Kelly. He is lovingly referred to as "Vinny" by his grandchildren, Boston Police Officer Michael Kelly and his wife Kristine, Colin Kelly, Daniel Kelly, Siobhan Kelly, Devin Kelly, Eamon Kelly and his great-granddaughter Emma James Kelly. He is the beloved brother of the late retired Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant Colonel Edward F. Kelly, William Kelly, Kevin Kelly and Daniel Kelly. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Vinny's Funeral on Monday, JULY 14, 2025, at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial will take place at Milton Cemetery, Milton. His visiting hours will be held on Sunday, JULY 13, 2025, from 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. in the funeral home.
