Obituary

Mary Jaynes, known to all as Joann, passed away on June 15, 2025, after a period of declining health with her daughters at her side. She was 85. Joanne grew up in Belmont and later moved to Waltham.

Above all, Joann was a survivor, overcoming many challenges in her life. She grew up in a very small house in Belmont with her 9 siblings. She lost her first husband at a very young age and was left to raise 4 daughters on her own. Her second husband, who adopted her 4 girls, died in 1980, and she lost both her long term partner, Joe B, and her daughter Tracy in 2006.

Joann is survived by her daughters, Sharon Sullivan, Liz Penton (Bill), and Lori Sullivan, (Ron Brown) and her grandchildren, Kyle Penton and Myles O’Donnell. She is also survived by her siblings, Carol Dargie of Waltham, Tom Jaynes (Linda) of California, Linda Mazzarini (Tony) of New Hampshire, Ele Jaynes (Robert Ward), of Milton, Deb Sweeney (Bill) of Belmont, her sister-in-law Mary Jaynes, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Maxwell Penton, and her siblings George Jaynes, Margaret Ottens, John “Jock” Jaynes, and Richard Jaynes.

She loved traveling and spending time on the boat at Marina Bay. She also loved vacationing in Ptown and visiting with her neighbors on Upland Road. In her later years she enjoyed watching game shows and visiting with her neighbors at St. Mary’s in Waltham.
