José F. Monteiro Jr., 87, of Dartmouth, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, peacefully at home, accompanied by his loving wife of 52 years, Angelina (Bulhões) Monteiro.
Mr. Monteiro was born in Achadinha, St. Michael, Azores, son of the late José Furtado Monteiro and Maria de Conceição (Teixeira) Furtado. He emigrated to New Bedford in 1967 and lived there until relocating to Dartmouth in 1981. He started his career as a cobbler at Knapp before securing a job in the production of artillery shells during the Vietnam War at Chamberlain. He subsequently entered the construction and carpentry fields for Cico and McCabe in Boston until he retired to advance his career as an entrepreneur and business owner until he passed away. Mr. Monteiro loved farming, his goats, and was an avid gardener. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling back to his homeland while connecting with those he knew over a glass of wine. He was a communicant of St. George Church in Westport.
Survivors, along with his wife, include his children: Luizinha B. Monteiro of Lake Oswego, OR, José M. Monteiro and his wife Paula of Kittery, ME, Brian B. Monteiro of New Bedford, and Stephanie M. Bach and her husband Matthew of Dartmouth; sisters: Emilia Furtado of New Bedford, Sofia Amaral and her husband Hector of Acushnet, and Fatima Furtado of New Bedford; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Josefina Amaral.
The hours for visitation at the funeral home are Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, starting at the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport, at 10:00 a.m.
Interment in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, New Bedford.
