Obituary

Richard “Dick” Almy, 94, peacefully passed away on June 13, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Providence, RI on March 16, 1931, Richard was the husband of the late Phyllis (Izzo) Almy and son of the late Roger Chester Almy and Irene (Thompson) Almy and brother to the late Donald C. Almy. Richard graduated from Aldrich High School in Warwick, RI where he was All State in football and recognized as most handsome in his high school yearbook. He received a full football scholarship to University of RI where he stayed and played for less than a year before deciding college was not for him. He was a proud Air Force veteran and member of the 102nd Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron Association. Richard served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 while stationed in Tripoli, North Africa. It was there that he converted to Catholicism after meeting a Catholic Missionary.

As a devout Catholic, he was a communicant of both St. Ann's and St. Mark’s Parishes, where he found comfort and strength. He instilled that same faith in his family. Sister Angelina of St. Mark’s Parish remarked that he was the strongest Catholic she knew for a “convert.” This would make him proud.

Richard was hired by his future wife and love of his life, Phyllis, at City Hall Hardware. They wed on June 15,1957 and were blessed with three daughters. Richard resided in Cranston where he spent the majority of his life with his late wife Phyllis, raising their daughters.

Richard worked construction before he began his lifelong career at the United States Postal Service in Providence in 1966. He spent 34 years working for the USPS before retiring in 1994. During his time at the post office, he served as a board member of the Providence Postal Employees Credit Union and held offices as Steward Director of Human Relations and Blood Bank Director for the American Postal Workers Union. He also had his own landscape business where he would take his young daughters with him, instilling in them a love of gardening.

Richard enjoyed skiing, the beach, golf, and was an avid cribbage player. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Upon his retirement he was busy volunteering for the West Warwick Emergency Management Agency and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. He also enjoyed spending mornings with his friends at Dunkin Donuts in Garden City.

He was a devoted husband to Phyllis, at home until 2023, when they moved to Atria Senior Living in Fairhaven, MA until her passing in March 2025. They celebrated life’s milestones - birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, births and the many accomplishments of their growing family. Phyllis and Richard’s strong marriage was a beautiful example for their family, inspiring some of their grandchildren to marry on their anniversary, June 15th.

Richard will be missed for his charm, wit, honesty and generosity, as well as his faith and humility, but most of all his simple and unconditional love for his friends and family.

Richard is survived by three devoted daughters: Judith Almy-Coutu and her husband William of South Dartmouth, MA, Sandra Almy Hayes and her husband Kurt of Westport, MA and Cynthia S. Rosa and her husband Frank of Westport, MA; his brother-in-law, Senator Thomas J. Izzo of Cranston, RI; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Maus, Lauren Coutu, Chelsea Schell, Nicholas Rosa, Lyle Rosa, Robert Hayes, Courtney Bridges, Ali Hayes, Harrison Hayes, and Jacob Hayes; 6 great grandchildren: Parker and Connor Maus, Knox Bridges, Jack Schell and Trystan and Tori Hayes as well as many beloved nieces and nephews

A private funeral mass will be held on June 24, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, MA followed by Interment at a later date at St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston, RI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38101.
