Obituary

Hagop Jack Nercessian of Arlington, 88, passed peacefully at home on June 15, 2025, Father’s Day, with his loving family by his side. Born on December 2, 1936, in Aleppo, Syria to the late Nerses Nercessian and Victoria (Vartanian) Nercessian, both of whom he carried in his heart every day of his life. Beloved husband of Sossy (Aposhian) Nercessian. Devoted father of Armen Nercessian, Shahan Nercessian, and his wife Ani. Cherished grandfather of Taleen Nercessian, the jewel of his eye. Loving brother of Berj Nercessian and his wife Marilyn; Seta Nercessian; and the late Hilda (Nercessian) Topjian, her late husband John “Jack” Topjian, and Jack’s sister, Betty Topjian. Adoring uncle of Ara Topjian, Raffi Topjian, his wife Jody, and their children, Tyler and Victoria.

Hagop believed strongly in the power of education. He attended Haigazian Elementary School (Aleppo) and the Lycée Français (Aleppo and Beirut), and then completed his graduate studies in electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany and Northeastern University. He began his professional career in Boston, including a five-year stint at MIT’s Space Research Center, before spending over 35 years working in medical devices at Hewlett-Packard (later, Agilent Technologies and Philips).

Hagop was a great lover of music and brought joy to countless parties and gatherings with his accordion. He actively participated in the Armenian community, including as a founding member of the Armenian Cultural Association (now, Hamazkayin Boston), a trustee of the St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church, and a representative on the National Representative Assembly.

We loved him dearly and will remember him always.

A funeral service celebrating Hagop’s life will be held at St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church, 38 Elton Avenue in Watertown, Massachusetts on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 11am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the church from 10am to 11am, immediately prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church or St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School. Interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
