Obituary

Martha C. Doughty
June 12, 2025

West Baldwin - Martha C. Doughty passed away peacefully at Ledgewood Manor in Windham on June 12th at the age of 93. She was born in 1932 in Hiram, the youngest of six children born to Alice Freeman Hartford and Herman Hartford. She was born premature, weighing 3 ½ pounds at birth, and always considered herself a survivor. She attended local schools and was a proud graduate of Fryeburg Academy, class of ‘51. She enjoyed attending their reunions well into her 80’s.

She married the love of her life, Fred W. Doughty, Sr. November 18th, 1951. Together they raised three children in the house Fred built in West Baldwin and where Martha would live for 70 years. Martha was a stay at home mom until the early 70’s when she went to work for GTE Sylvania and where she stayed for 18 years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after retirement and endured surgery and chemotherapy which helped her beat the cancer forever. She and Fred were married for 59 years until his passing in August of 2010.

Family meant everything to Martha and she relished spending time with her family whenever she could. She loved family reunions as she got to see all of her extended family. She also loved the holidays as they meant everyone would be together. She hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas for her family well into her 80s. She was known for her wonderful baked goods, especially her rolls and pies. She loved baking for family and friends and donated her pies to church bake sales for many years.

Martha was predeceased by her parents, her five siblings and their spouses, her beloved husband Fred, and her son Bruce. She is survived by her son Fred and his wife, Jocelyn of West Baldwin, her daughter Brenda Reinsborough and her husband William (Butch) of Pownal, eight grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ledgewood Manor for their kindness, compassion and excellent care during Martha’s final few years, especially Donna and Brandon who cared for her as if she were their own mom. Martha kept her sense of humor until the end, which endeared her to all who spent time with her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to your local animal shelter. Martha always loved animals and had a special relationship with her “grand-dog” Marley. A graveside service will be held at the old West Baldwin Cemetery on Saturday, July 12th at 10:00 am.
