Obituary

The earthly journey of Paul J. Dee, Jr. came to a peaceful ending on June 12, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in the company of his loving wife, Jane.

Paul was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on February 15, 1949 to his late parents, Paul J. and Eleanor H. Dee. He spent his younger years in North Carolina and Maryland before moving to New Hampshire with his family. Paul was a graduate of Bishop Bradley High School.

He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston and his Juris Doctor degree at New England School of Law in Boston. Emboldened by his law degree, Paul joined the Internal Revenue Service Office of District Counsel in Boston before establishing a private law practice that focused on tax defense. He often described his clients simply as people who were not very good at math. In addition, Paul was a popular professor sharing his tax expertise with students at New England School of Law and Bentley University.

Paul was not a perfect man, nor a famous man, but he was a very good man who made the most out of the second chances life offered him. Paul was a mentor to young learners, an active sponsor of people struggling with life’s challenges, and a genuine friend to the many people he met on his life’s journey. He had the admirable ability to accept people as they were without question or judgment.

Paul enjoyed many simple and important things in life. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Paul was an avid golfer, belonging to the “devilishly narrow” Thomson Country Club in North Reading for many years, and playing at golf courses all across the country. Paul enjoyed a good game of cribbage and was a devoted reader of news and sports stories, often saying that if he hadn’t become a lawyer, he would have become a reporter. Wherever he was, chaos often ensued, and he loved recounting his experiences. Paul had a gift for telling hilarious stories with a biting wit and a completely straight face, and he was exceptional at poking fun at himself.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Jane of Saugus, MA, his sister Susan McMahon and her husband Joseph of Florida, his sister Colleen Dee of Halifax, MA, his brother Gregory Dee and his wife Carol of Pembroke, MA, his sister-in-law Catherine Porter and her husband Dave of Falmouth, MA, and his brother-in-law John Farrissey and his wife Minty of Westport, MA. In addition, Paul leaves many loving nieces and nephews. His brother’s children, in particular, have very distinct memories of an uncle who provided them great experiences to later recount to their wide-eyed parents.

Services will be private and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Paul’s family extends a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Massachusetts General Hospital for their extraordinary kindness and compassion in caring for Paul.
