Margaret Catherine Sweeney, 84, a lifelong Lowell resident, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Tuesday, June 3.
Margaret was born in Lowell on July 6, 1940, a daughter of the late John Sweeney and the late Mildred (Pendergast) Sweeney. She was raised in Pawtucketville and was a graduate of St. Patrick Parochial School and Keith Hall. She then moved on to graduate from Lowell State and Fitchburg State where she graduated with a Masters Degree in education. She then taught in the Lowell school system for 8 years. After furthering her education at Lowell Commercial College and enjoying a 30 year career in the administrative department of Hanscom Air Force Base, she retired in the 1990’s. In 2005, Margaret received The Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award from the Department of the Air Force, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian by the Air Force.
Margaret was a longtime communicant of St. Rita’s Church and loved to play the piano. She had a bubbly personality and was friendly to all.
She is survived by her brother, John Sweeney of Lowell.
On Friday, June 13, 2025 all are welcome to attend her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Rita’s Church, 158 Mammoth Road, Lowell, MA followed by a procession for her burial at St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell. Please meet directly at church.
