Obituary

Martha A. (Cooney) Feran, 92, a lifelong resident of Tewksbury, who raised six children with her late husband William C. "Bill" Feran, passed away peacefully on June 5 in her home at Bayberry at Emerald Court.

She is survived by five of her children: Michele Feran and her husband, Alan Greenberg, of Montreal; Martha Camarda of Somerset, N.J.; Suzanne Flanagan and her husband, Kevin, of Reading; Marianne Feran and her husband, Rick Healy, of Melrose; Terence Feran of Everett; and nephew Patrick Feran and his wife, Ellen, of Haverhill. Her son Michael, husband of Colleen Bonno of Mexico, passed away in 2019.

Also surviving her are nine grandchildren: Sean Feran and his wife, Jamie, of Colorado; Brennan Feran and his wife, Suzanne, of Kentucky; Gilian Murray and her husband, Lucas Smalley, of Montreal; Darragh Feran and his wife, Sujung Mun, of Montreal; Wiliam Camarda and his wife, Alison, of Vermont; Christine (Camarda) Arocho and her husband, Juan, of Virginia; Rebecca Camarda of New Jersey; David Flanagan of Reading; and Daniel Flanagan of Texas. Martha is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Born April 16, 1933 in Lowell, Martha was the eldest child and only daughter of Bartholomew "Bert" Cooney and Marguerite (Dubuque) Cooney of Lowell. The family moved to Tewksbury shortly after Martha was born, where she and her brothers enjoyed happy childhoods on the family farm. Her three brothers, James, Thomas, and Peter Cooney, predeceased her. She is survived by her sisters-in-law June Cooney and Susan Cooney.

Martha was the valedictorian of the Tewksbury Memorial High School class of 1951. Her extracurricular activities included cheerleading, where she rooted for her future husband, Bill, who was a three-sport star. Martha studied home economics at UMass Amherst.

Martha worked for many years as a librarian in the Tewksbury school system until her retirement. She was an expert seamstress who made her own and her daughter Suzanne's wedding gowns, and many bridesmaid gowns among countless sewing, crochet, cross-stitch, rug-braiding, and knitting projects.

Martha was an expert cook who hosted sumptuous dinners for her family each Sunday and on holidays. She was renowned for her amazing baking skills, especially delicious cookies and fudge, and beautiful cakes created for special occasions. Martha also doted on the dogs and cats that were part of her family.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, June 10, 2025 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey St., Tewksbury. Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral mass at St. William’s Church, 1351 Main St., Tewksbury at 11:30 a.m.. Private burial will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery, 172 East St. Tewksbury.
