Obituary

John H. Carroll, Jr, of Andover, MA passed away on June 5, 2025, at Holy Family Hospital following a short illness. He was born on July 1, 1928, in Philadelphia, PA, the first son of the now deceased John H. Carroll and Sara (Landy) Carroll. He received his bachelor’s degree from Villanova, and his Master’s degree in International Relations from George Washington University.

Jack brought his family to Andover in 1971, after having retired from the U.S. Navy as a Commander. He managed the Merrimack Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross for the next twenty years, and then served as a delegate of the International Red Cross, managing disaster relief efforts in Central and South America until his final retirement in 2003.

Throughout his Naval career, Commander Carroll served as a carrier pilot. Following the Korean War and service in three squadrons, he spent several tours of duty overseas; as a Naval Attache is Spain, and as a professor at the Argentine Navy War College. He finished his career as a member of the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.

He was the past President of the Greater Lawrence Kiwanis Club, and of the board of directors of Central Catholic High School. He also served on the boards of directors of the Community Savings Bank, Lawrence Boys Club and Merrimack Valley AAA.

He enjoyed following the athletic careers of his six grandchildren and spending time with family and friends at his hunting lodge in northwest Pennsylvania.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dolores, and three sons--John, of Londonderry, NH, Kevin and wife Catherine of North Andover, MA, and Matthew and wife Darlene of Kingston, NH, six grandchildren-- Patrick and wife Emily of Amesbury, MA, Michael and wife Katherine of Peachtree Corners, GA, Sarah and husband Chris Olsen of Londonderry, NH, Rebekah of Londonderry, NH, Erin of East Meadow, NY, and Shannon of Wilmington, DE— and four great-grandchildren, Lucy and Allison, daughters of Patrick and Emily, and Avery and Owen, children of Michael and Katherine.

John's Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 4 to 8 PM. Interment will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
