Arthur J. Schofield, 82, of Scenic View Drive, Smithfield, peacefully passed on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at his home with his wife and family by his side. He and Claire (Buckley) Schofield had been married for 60 years.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Arthur and Gladys Schofield. He resided in Smithfield since 1978, previously in Coventry and Providence.
Arthur was a dragster racer, hot rod builder, scrap yard owner and one of the first and last construction workers on the Newport Bridge. He was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 57 and the RI National Guard. In his “retirement” he wintered in Florida and became a vendor at flea markets in both Florida and Rhode Island where he could share his gift for gab.
He is survived by his wife, Claire; his children: Arthur Schofield of West Palm Beach, Florida, Paul Schofield of Smithfield and Timothy Schofield of Smithfield; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his sister; Barbara Bogosian of Warwick.
Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Tuesday, June 10th at 10am in St. Michael's Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Burial will be private. Visitation is omitted.
