Barbara Anne (Assad) Smith, 64, of Westport, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, at her home. She was the wife of the late Kenneth W. Smith.
Mrs. Smith was born in Fall River and was the daughter of the late Wajeeh and Joanne C. (Rapoza) Assad and had resided in Westport for many years. Prior to retirement, she worked as a fourth-grade teacher at the Potter Elementary School in Dartmouth. Working with children, education, and teaching were true passions of hers which permeated every aspect of her life. She attained a master’s degree in education and was active in curriculum development and planning. Following retirement, she enjoyed gardening, beautifying her home and property, spending time with family and friends, and reading. She was very proud of her only son, Ryan, who became a physician and a medical school associate dean.
Barbara is survived by her beloved son, Dr. Ryan M. Smith and his husband Howard Pelkey, of Clermont, Florida; her brother: Steven Assad and his wife Lisa of Dartmouth; her sister: Paula Assad of New Bedford; her nephew, Henry Assad of Dartmouth; along with additional cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be Thursday, July 3, 2025 at St. George Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M. Any former co-workers or students of Mrs. Smith who would like to attend the service are more than welcomed and it would be wonderful to see such a gathering in her honor.
Interment will be private.
