McGEE, Joseph P. - Of Plymouth and formerly Dedham, May 30, 2025. Beloved husband of the late Linda (Withington) McGee for 54 years. Devoted father of Michael P. McGee and his wife Lynne of Plymouth, Donna McGee Tolley and her husband Stephen of Dedham, and the late Kevin McGee. Loving “Papa” to Emma and Kyra Tolley, and grandfather to Sarah and Catherine McGee. Brother of John McGee, and his late sisters Josephine Flavin, Evelyn Doran and Marie McGee. “Uncle Joe” to many nieces and nephews.
Joe grew up in Roslindale and Jamaica Plain. At 17, he enlisted in the Air Force for four years and received training as a radar avionics technician. He returned to Massachusetts and shortly after met Linda, whom he married in 1962 and started their happy life together in Dedham. After going to night school for more than a decade, Joe earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. He worked at Charles Stark Draper Labs for 32 years, bringing his engineering talents to the Lab’s work on aviation and aeronautics programs including the Apollo Guidance system. He retired in 1999 to join Linda (“Nana”) in taking care of Emma and Kyra as infants while their parents worked.
In retirement, Joe was often found on the golf course, playing in the Brookmeadow Country Club league, and hitting the links with his son and nephew. He enjoyed nothing more than time with his family; he appreciated a nice bourbon and ginger; and he loved taking in the ocean views at Manomet Point and Sagamore Beach. Joe was a cherished father and a doting grandfather, and he will be greatly missed.
Joe’s family would like to thank the assisted living staff at Laurelwood at The Pinehills for their care and support of their father over the past few years.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St, Dedham on Tuesday, June 3 from 4-7pm. His funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday, June 4 at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham at 10am. Relatives and friends kindly invited.
