Obituary

Bertha “Lottie” Davis Wright, 95 of Abbeville, Georgia, died Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Cypress Pond Senior Care in Tifton, Georgia.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ben Hill County, from 4:30 PM until 5:30 PM, in the sanctuary.

Mrs. Wright was born May 14, 1930, in Fitzgerald, Georgia to the late James “ Chick” and Charlotte Jarchow Drexler. She graduated high school in 1949, then attended Nursing school. She later worked as a Paraprofessional for Ben Hill County Schools and drove a bus. Her greatest joys were her family and cooking for the public.

Bertha grew up on the Drexler egg farm and gained national recognition for her poultry expertise. On December 4, 1947 Bertha won a $200 scholarship in Chicago, Illinois at the National 4H Club Congress. She demonstrated a mastery of five poultry project categories including egg candling, egg grading, production and more. When she returned from Chicago in triumph she was met in Tifton by the high school band and community leaders who rode with her as police escorted them to the Fitzgerald Chamber of Commerce where she was honored at a reception. Bertha remained an active member of 4H until she left school. Her love of extension, 4H, and chickens never stopped.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Dianne & Johnny Luke, Bonnie & Mike Kelly, and Jimmy & Amelia Davis all of Fitzgerald; step-children: Mark & Sharon Wright of Colorado, and Debbie & Alan Austin; grandchildren: Joshua & Brooklyn Luke, Kathryn & Mike Osborne, Rebekah Davis and Rachel & Josh Reed; great grandchild, Maddie Reed; siblings: Jim Drexler of Fitzgerald, Alice Drexler McDuffie of Tifton, Ed Drexler of Fitzgerald, Grace Caldwell of Newnan, and Johnny Drexler of Fitzgerald. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Edison Edward Davis and William Talley Wright Jr.; and two sisters: Joan Drexler Brown and Virginia Snowden.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Gideons International, c/o Ben Hill-Irwin Camp, P.O. Box 752, Fitzgerald, GA 31750, in Mrs. Bertha’s memory.
