During his retirement he worked to reclaim the hiking trails in the Belknap Mountain Range and spent every opportunity enjoying the log cabin in Maine that he and his son Gary built by hand. He continued to enjoy fishing and hunting along with his love of gardening and hiking.

In 2005 he met Martha Swanson and they were married in 2006. During their time together they spent countless hours outdoors enjoying activities including travel, downhill skiing, kayaking and enjoying the sun and beaches across New England.
