Obituary

Marie B. (Schetz) Bulkeley, age 87, of Billerica, passed away on May 27, 2025, after a brief illness.

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Stephen M. and Marie R. (Brady) Schetz. Marie was a graduate of Mount St. Mary Academy in Watchung, New Jersey, and St. Elizabeth University in Morris Township, New Jersey, where she earned a degree in art.

After college Marie worked for a time as a high school art teacher in her hometown of Union, New Jersey. Having the desire to visit the west coast, she moved to San Francisco, California, and then to Reno, Nevada, where she spent many years by the mountains she loved and enjoyed hiking and skiing. She spent the majority of her career working as an accountant for numerous small businesses and ultimately came back to work in Massachusetts to be close to family.

Marie loved all of nature, including flowers, plants, and trees, and could often be found gardening. She was particularly fond of animals–dogs, cats, horses, and wolves. When she returned east, there was no question she would travel with her beloved two dogs and two cats at her side. An artist at heart, she enjoyed oil painting and watercolors and had a gift for decorating. She loved to take trips to the Freeport area of Maine and always relished the opportunity to have an authentic Maine lobster roll.

Marie looked forward to family gatherings on holidays and birthdays and loved each member of her family dearly. She is lovingly survived by her sister, Nancy C. Jones of Winchester. She was also the devoted aunt of Christopher Jones and his wife Jean of Winchester, Kristin Jones of New York City, and Peter Jones and his wife Julie Flaherty of Lexington, and was also the great-aunt of Margaret and Katherine Jones of Winchester and Ada Jones of Lexington.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for a Visitation at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Friday, May 30, at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester, at 10 AM. Burial will be in Holy Rood Cemetery, Morristown, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie’s memory may be made to the Front Range Equine Rescue or the Yellowstone Wolf Project.
