Obituary

Martha P. Mikkelsen, 84, of Waterman Drive, Scituate, died peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at her home, with her family by her side. She was the wife of Frederick W. Mikkelsen, Jr. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 1st.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Henry A. and Kathleen (Critchley) Luther of Cranston. After marrying in 1965, she moved to Scituate into a house she and Frederick built together. Together they shared a happy and loving home 60 years.

Martha was the bookkeeper at Arrow Lakes Dairy in Cranston, then a stay-at-home mom while her children were young. When her children started school, she worked for M. Earl Adams Machine Company and finally training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant working first for Northwest Visiting Nurses, then as private duty aide before retiring.

In her spare time Martha enjoyed quilting, knitting beautiful socks and mittens, gardening, BINGO and trips to the casino. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star and an active member of the Women’s Fellowship at the North Scituate Baptist Church. She manned the cheese table selling Cabot cheese at the church’s annual Christmas Faire. She was a Camp Fire Girl leader and Cub Scout Leader for many years. She traveled across the country with her husband to many blacksmith meets, exploring the local areas of interest in Colorado, Arizona and other states.

Besides her husband, Martha is survived by her children: Heidi I. Mikkelsen-McCabe of North Scituate, Erik W. Mikkelsen and his wife Stephanie of North Scituate, Kristen E. Mikkelsen and Robert Hornung of Madison, VA and grandchildren Raden Mikkelsen of Cranston and Kameron Hornung of Madison, VA. Her siblings: Henry A. Luther of Smithfield, Richard B. Luther of Maine and Allen R. Luther of Scituate and two grandchildren. She was the twin sister of the late Milton P. Luther and sister of the late Carol A. Luther.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday May 28th at 11am in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Burial will be at a late date in Riverside Cemetery, Winchendon, MA. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10am – 11am.
