February 24, 1935 - May 20, 2025
Robert Judson Barrett, Jr., beloved father, grandfather, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born on February 24, 1935, in North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Robert was the eldest child of Robert and Violet (Thomson) Barrett. He was predeceased by his younger siblings, Martha, Arthur, and Dwight (“Doug”).
Robert was married for 62 years to the love of his life, Emily Harrison Barrett (Perry), who passed away a few years ago. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, learning, and community.
He is survived by his four sons: Nathan Robert Barrett and his wife Deborah; Benjamin Arthur Barrett and his partner Vivian; James Harrison Barrett and his wife Kimberly, along with their two children, his cherished grandchildren, Samuel and Katherine; and Joshua Barrett and his wife Cheryl. He also leaves behind many beloved relatives and lifelong friends.
After graduating from the Rhode Island College of Education (RICE), Robert enrolled in Officer Candidate School and went on to serve as a Navy officer. His service took him to Grand Turk for 18 months, followed by six months in Key West. After marrying Emily, he was stationed on Nantucket for over a year, where their first son, Nathan, was born.
A passionate educator, Robert taught English for many decades at Stonington High School in Stonington, CT, which later transitioned into a guidance counselor role. Even after retiring, he continued teaching in adult education through Groton Public Schools, always finding joy in helping others grow and learn.
A devoted member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic, CT, Robert served faithfully in numerous roles over the years, reflecting his deep and abiding faith.
Robert was a gifted runner, qualifying multiple times for the Boston Marathon and proudly completing the 26.2-mile course in under three hours- a testament to his discipline and endurance. He loved the outdoors, especially hiking, camping, and time spent at Napatree Point Beach and Watch Hill’s Harkness House with “The Gang,” a close-knit group of family friends whose shared adventures brought him great joy.
A lifelong lover of literature, Robert filled the family home with shelves of books- first edition classics among them. He was also a poet, often writing verse for Emily, their sons, and special occasions. Though not a musician himself, he instilled in his sons a deep appreciation for music, introducing them to the symphonies of Sibelius and the timeless works of Bach, Beethoven- and The Beatles!
A service celebrating Robert’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 31st, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT. Burial will follow in the church’s Memorial Garden.
