Obituary

Setta H. Arevian, of Brockton, MA, lived what she often called a magical life. A lifelong lover of beauty, she found joy in flower and plant gardens, classical music, fashion and jewelry, interior design, and art in all its forms. She delighted in the sight of a tree in full bloom, a snowstorm in motion, or sunlight filtering through the clouds just so. With an exceptional eye for design and proportion, she might have been an artist in another life.

A 1951 graduate of Brockton High School, Setta embarked on a transformative six-month journey with her mother to the Middle East, traveling by ship from New York City to Cairo, with stops in Marseilles, Naples, Beirut, and Alexandria. This trip, a gift from her uncle, ignited her lifelong passion for travel. Over the years, she explored much of Europe, North and Central America, and South America, always returning home with stories and beautiful treasures.

At 25, Setta began working at Hanscom Air Force Base as a reporter, a role that led to positions with the United Nations at Châteauroux Air Force Base in central France, and later with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Embassy in Paris. She spent four rich and formative years in France.

Returning to the U.S., Setta settled in Boston, where she enjoyed a two-decade career as a buyer for Filene’s department store. Her work there allowed her to continue traveling, especially to New York City and Europe, further nurturing her appreciation for style and culture.

Eventually, Setta returned to Brockton to help care for her parents, and had a ten-year career as a real estate broker. In retirement, she remained active and engaged. A devoted member of the Brockton Garden Club, she also took classes in painting, art history, and Spanish at local colleges. A dedicated patron of the arts, she was a proud member of the Museum of Fine Arts and Symphony Hall in Boston. Her home and car were always filled with the sounds of her beloved classical music station, WCRB, which she supported faithfully.

Setta is survived by her beloved “baby” brother, Garon Arevian; her sister-in-law, Lillian Arevian; her nephew, Garin Arevian and his wife Kelly, and their three sons, Jared, Dylan, and Carson; and her niece, Nadine McGowan, her husband Peter, and their children, Declan and Keira.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Setta’s memory by supporting the arts in any way—buy a museum ticket, listen to WCRB, or simply pause to appreciate the beauty in nature, as she so often did.
