Mary (Costello) Velasquez, 61, of Norwood, passed away Monday evening peacefully in her home surrounded by family. She was born on March 16, 1964, as the eighth and final child to the late John and Jean Costello of Roslindale.
Mary is survived by her devoted daughter and best friend Amanda Velasquez, her siblings Fr. John Costello, Janet Hoye and her husband Bryan, Paul Costello, Robert Costello, Fred Costello, Jean Forte, and Kevin Costello and his wife Marilyn. She is also survived by her ex-husband and lifelong friend Yorick Velasquez, many nieces, nephews and a large extended family.
Mary grew up in Roslindale and graduated from St. Claire’s High School in 1982. Mary’s life goal and dream was realized in 1987, when she became a mother to Amanda. Mary’s love for Amanda and the amazing bond they shared was unparalleled.
Mary had a deep love and passion for all animals. She was obsessed with the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. Mary would watch every game in her jersey with Amanda, screaming at the TV cheering her teams on to victory. Her favorite players/crushes over the years were Julian Edelman and Patrice Bergeron. Mary loved staying up all hours of the night with her partner in crime watching ridiculous movies and binging on Netflix. In Mary’s healthier years she loved to travel to Hawaii and Bermuda, go on cruises, and dance at family parties and celebrations. She loved to feel the breeze whipping her hair and the sun on her face when she rode in the sidecar of the Harley. She loved being with her family and friends in the Costello backyard for endless cookouts, days filled with laughter, and late-night swims in the pool. She loved food and dinners at Acapulco’s, Golden Abacus, The Pleasant, and Hibachi.
Mary was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 38 years ago. She was tough as nails, meeting every obstacle with grit and an enormous smile. She never complained and due to her stubborn nature did not let this horrible disease stop her from being an amazing mom. Family was always the most important thing to Mary. She instilled that value in her daughter, raising one of the most loyal, devoted, generous human beings. For the past 16 years Amanda has provided 24/7 care for her Mom. She gave Mary the greatest, most selfless gift one can ever provide. Her family and friends will always view Amanda as the greatest achievement of her short but significant life.
Visting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 27th from 10am-12pm at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA. A burial and celebration of life will immediately follow.
